How to up your business's digital content on social media.
“Did you know that social media is the number one daily activity among Americans?” (Weber, 2021). Honestly, this doesn’t surprise me one bit. We are constantly sending messages, getting notifications, and uploading content; it’s a wonder that we don’t do all our communicating through the internet. As a business professional, it’s important that you take advantage of the flexibility in using social media when you have something to share. Digital marketing takes time but is important to expanding your customer base and engaging/informing current customers. There are several things you can do to boost reach and audience engagement through social media, which are outlined below.
Know yourself and know your audience
A simple place to start on your journey to digital marketing is setting goals. Goals that pertain to digital marketing may include more website views or followers, audience engagement, and/or positive reviews from customers. When you know your goals, you will have a better idea of how to go about posting on social media.
You should also have an extensive knowledge of your audience. Do you know where they get their content? Are they using Facebook or Instagram? Does your business relate more towards female or male customers? These are all great questions to ask yourself about your target audience. It’s important to post content where and when your audience will be looking for it.
Post often and with purpose
How often should I be posting? To be honest, I’ve heard marketers say it’s not a bad idea to post multiple times a day (especially on Twitter) and others advise that posting more than once a day will disengage your audience. I stick with this rule and post up to four times per week per social media platform. Rarely do I have two things to inform the audience of in one day. It’s important to note that if you have nothing to say, don’t say anything. Posting on social media just to do it won’t help you achieve your goals.
According to Lindsay Cox of HubSpot, “Companies with less than 10,000 followers that post more than 60 times a month receive 60% fewer clicks per post than those companies that post 5 or fewer times a month,” (Cox, 2020). While this might be a good strategy for Facebook, “top brands on Instagram… post an average of 1.5 times per day,” (Anthony, 2021).
I’d say the frequency in which you post to social media will depend on the platform and your target demographic. Younger audiences will be browsing social media more often than older audiences and Instagram is now more popular than Facebook. Play around with how often you post and keep track of engagement. You can then determine when to post to which social platforms.
Keep content consistent
It’s vital to keep your social media content consistent across all platforms. If you’re posting about an event on Facebook, post about the same event on Instagram and on your website, at the same time, on the same day. The visual content does not need to be exactly the same, but similar as audiences may follow you on multiple platforms. Whatever your brand identifiers are, stick to those across the board. Brand identifiers may include color scheme, visuals (like your logo), and fonts. These are elements that help your audience recognize your brand. Include these in every post, on every platform, so your content is easily identifiable.
Social media is such a large part of our daily lives, that it would be insane to not use it to your business’s advantage. These platforms can assist you in engaging with your audience, informing customers, and reaching new people. Sticking to your target demographic and keeping content consistent are vital to thriving through digital marketing. If all else fails, Ad Design can create digital content for you! Happy posting!
